{"id":4947,"date":"2025-09-12T08:57:31","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T08:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/granfondolanucia.com\/?p=4947"},"modified":"2025-09-12T09:06:58","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T09:06:58","slug":"del-toro-and-ferrand-prevot-embody-the-firm-step-towards-equality-in-cycling-at-the-criterium-and-gran-fondo-la-nucia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/granfondolanucia.com\/en\/del-toro-and-ferrand-prevot-embody-the-firm-step-towards-equality-in-cycling-at-the-criterium-and-gran-fondo-la-nucia\/","title":{"rendered":"Del Toro and Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot embody the firm step towards equality in cycling at the Criterium and Gran Fondo La Nuc\u00eda."},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Miguel Indur\u00e1in signs off on the redesigned route of a sportive that next year will be part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The <strong>Edifici dels Esports<\/strong>, the beating heart of the spectacular <strong>Camilo Cano Sports City<\/strong>, hosted this Monday the official presentation of the second edition of the <strong>Crit\u00e9rium and Gran Fondo La Nuc\u00eda<\/strong>, which will be held on October 18 and 19, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The event was attended by the organizer of the double cycling event, <strong>Javier Castellar<\/strong>; <strong>Miguel Indur\u00e1in<\/strong>, legend of Spanish and world cycling and in charge of redesigning the Gran Fondo route; the mayor of La Nuc\u00eda, <strong>Bernab\u00e9 Cano<\/strong>; the president of the Alicante Provincial Council, <strong>Toni P\u00e9rez<\/strong>; and the regional minister of Industry and Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana, <strong>Mari\u00e1n Cano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This 2025, the Crit\u00e9rium La Nuc\u00eda takes a historic step by becoming a <strong>mixed competition<\/strong>, where men and women will compete together for the first time. A decision that, in the words of the organizers, <em>\u201crepresents a fundamental step toward full equality in cycling and in sport in general.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Del Toro and Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot confirmed<\/h2>\n<p>The Saturday, October 18 race has already confirmed the participation of stars such as <strong>Isaac del Toro<\/strong>, the revelation of world cycling, and <strong>Pauline Ferrand-Pr\u00e9vot<\/strong>, current champion of the Tour de France and Paris\u2013Roubaix. In the coming weeks, more names from both the present and the history of cycling will be announced, joining the lineup arriving in La Nuc\u00eda next October.<\/p>\n<p>It was also confirmed that one of last year\u2019s most thrilling events will return to the Crit\u00e9rium: <strong>\u201cThe Duel.\u201d<\/strong> Six-time Spanish rally champion (and the only driver to have won the title with front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive cars) <strong>Miguel Fuster<\/strong> will once again challenge the best cyclists in the world. Last year, driving the Citro\u00ebn with which <strong>S\u00e9bastien Loeb<\/strong> won the World Championship, he went head-to-head with <strong>Mathieu van der Poel<\/strong> and <strong>Alejandro Valverde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>A renewed route<\/h2>\n<p>On Sunday, October 19, the <strong>Gran Fondo La Nuc\u00eda<\/strong> will take place, featuring a completely redesigned route created by <strong>Miguel Indur\u00e1in.<\/strong> It will cover <strong>132 kilometers<\/strong> with <strong>2,275 meters of elevation gain<\/strong>, starting and finishing at the <strong>Camilo Cano Sports City.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The course will include iconic climbs such as the <strong>Sierra de Aitana<\/strong> and the <strong>Coll de Rates<\/strong>, the latter with a timed section so that each participant can test their strength and chase their best record.<\/p>\n<p>The route will pass through some of the most emblematic spots in the province of Alicante, such as <strong>Finestrat<\/strong> \u2014a decisive point in the 1992 World Championships won by <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gianni_Bugno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gianni Bugno<\/strong> <\/a>(who raced last year\u2019s Crit\u00e9rium) and where <strong>Miguel Indur\u00e1in<\/strong> finished sixth\u2014 as well as <strong>Relleu, Fageca, Famorca, Castell de Castells, T\u00e1rbena, Callosa d\u2019en Sarri\u00e0,<\/strong> and <strong>Polop de la Marina.<\/strong> A course that combines toughness, breathtaking scenery, and historical cycling landmarks. In other words, a true ode to <strong>cycle tourism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>La Nuc\u00eda, an award-winning city<\/h2>\n<p>The mayor of La Nuc\u00eda, <strong>Bernab\u00e9 Cano<\/strong>, expressed his great satisfaction at the return of the Crit\u00e9rium and Gran Fondo to his town a year later. As he explained, <em>\u201cFor us it is very important to host major events in our municipality. Not only for what these events represent in themselves, but also for what they mean as a showcase for our \u2018City of Sport\u2019 and for the example that great athletes give to all our citizens.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He also recalled that La Nuc\u00eda has earned some of the most important national and international awards and recognitions (including being twice named <strong>European Town of Sport<\/strong> by the European Commission) and that <em>\u201cmany federations have chosen it as the base for training and preparation camps for their athletes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This reality, he insisted, has made La Nuc\u00eda the training ground for many of those who won medals and Olympic titles at the recent <strong>Paris Games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Cycling and tourism, a perfect match<\/h2>\n<p>Both the president of the Alicante Provincial Council, <strong>Toni P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, and the regional minister of Tourism and Innovation, <strong>Mari\u00e1n Cano<\/strong>, emphasized the enormous tourism value of cycling and, in particular, of events like the Crit\u00e9rium and Gran Fondo.<\/p>\n<p>They highlighted that <em>\u201ccycling is an activity that allows us, on the one hand, to open our destinations to new source markets and strengthen the ones we already have, and on the other, to reduce the seasonality of tourism during the autumn and winter months, when almost all professional teams and thousands of amateur cyclists choose our region to prepare their seasons.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With this second edition, the <strong>Crit\u00e9rium and <a href=\"https:\/\/granfondolanucia.com\/\">Gran Fondo La Nuc\u00eda<\/a><\/strong> establishes itself as a reference on the cycling calendar, capable of attracting great stars, promoting gender equality, and offering fans and participants a unique experience in a privileged
